August has been a pretty good month for quality surf and surf photography. There was a good mix of swell and waves for a couple of weeks with some pretty solid days. All just a memory now.

The last week has been remarkably flat over the entire NSW coast. We have been having consistent off shore winds but with no swell coming from the ocean. Though winter may have one last blast..

There is the promise of a change, with the same weather system that made amazing lines in Torquay moving across the Southern Ocean into the South Coast swell window. We have a good chance of quality waves on Saturday and into Sunday. Cancel your appointments…

The semi distant surf trip is always a bit of a gamble. Wednesday provided some conditions that made finding a wave a bit of a challenge but the South Coast mission paid off..

This is no secret spot and there was no shortage of people with the same idea, so very few waves went unridden. Matt showing devotion deep on one of the bomb waves of the session….

There was a bit of juice in the sets and the wind was less than perfect, roughening the surface flaring the lip. But the place is a machine as you can see from the number of perfect barrels.

What an amazing few days of swell. Wednesday had a beautiful E/NE swell coming in at 4ft lighting up an amazing array of spots throughout the Illawarra. It was an ideal day for surf photography but unfortunately I freaked out and surfed all day instead.

The swell was fading but still around on Thursday when these shots were taken. Despite being smaller, conditions were still ideal with all day offshores holding little barrels open up and down the coast…

Matt Hinge, in the first three pictures was making the most of it and reaping the rewards for being willing to pull in deep….

All or nothing

That must have been the quickest a swell of that magnitude has come and gone. There were a few spots around that had the balance of exposure and protection. Ian Lloyd finds one.

The energy was starting to wane in the afternoon but the wind dropped slightly and there were a few waves pushing in.

By Wednesday but the swell had all but dried up. I think a lot of people wer ehoping on some amazing waves but it was a decaying 2 foot and even smaller today. The wind is offshore so there might be something, somewhere….

Tuesday was a pretty wild morning with 30 knot Southerlies and a lumpy wild south swell coming up over night… The point offered a bit of protection and some waves were lining up…

Not many were willing to take on the rough conditions, cold water and howling winds….

But there was some sweet clean sections amongst the fatness if you looked in the right place…

The swell has peaked and dropped rapidly though the day but hopefully will last another day.

There are all day westerly winds forecasted for Wednesday and promise of swell all week and into the weekend. Hopefully it will settle down and clean up.

A few days of waves

Late last week and into the weekend there were some little waves around with occasional 3ft set to be had at some locations. The winds were perfect at 10knots offshore grooming the little NE swell into some perfect shapes…

Water temp has dropped to about 16 degrees, so it is only the keen and the well equipped getting out now.

There is a bit of Southern activity predicted for early in the week so stay tuned. Hopefully those offshores stay around for it….

W I N T E R

There have been a few waves around the last week or so. But far from perfect.
It is pouring rain right now with a 20 knot ENE wind, so you are not missing a thing.

With a lack of waves to photograph, my fascination continues with the clouds. Plus was pointing my lens at these super size seagulls that were hanging at the Point the other day…

Finbox….

There aint much happening in the swell department so how about you go and check out an awesome selection of local surf photography on display at Finbox in Thirroul. Up the north end past Jacksons hardware. Chris is putting on a bit of a sale at the moment too.

One of those shops that makes you want to buy something because it all looks so good. There is a quality selection of surf boards, funky clothes, cool looking huge skateboards and all sorts of other stuff – not to mention the awesome original photo-art hanging on the wall ..

Winter Hues

The swell has been a bit disappointing through the middle of Winter but there is some promise for Wednesday…Thankfully the school holidays are over and the cold is here…

Some lines were starting to push up on Tuesday arvo with a bunch of superkeen groms onto it at the point… The sets were head high with some clean ones coming through..

The sky was alive with sunset colours, storm clouds and a rainbow over the end of the point.
