Thursday was cold and windy with 2-3 ft of onshore mush washing into Bondi but it was a perfect day to complete the epic ocean journey from Byron by Dave Rastovich and the rest of the Surfers for Cetaceans team. There were some crew from the Sea Shepherd organisation there and plenty punters braving the crappy conditions to welcome them in…

They paddled and sailed and surfed down the coast with the migrating whales to raise awareness of the fate of many whales at the hands of the Jap whalers… A friggin admirable effort.

The Steve Irwin, a boat dedicated to disrupting the annual whale hunt is in Freemantle preparing to head down to the Southern Ocean… A mob well worth supporting if you get any joy from watching the whales swim past each migration season… The consequences of inaction are tragic…
Paddle out. Thursday. Spread the word.

A humpback whale breaching off Newcastle – photo by Bruce Hodgkinson…
It has been pretty busy in the water over the last few weeks with the Humpback whales migrating south. Every time I see them I feel stoked and angry at the same time. Stoked that we get to share the ocean with such amazing creatures and friggin angry that the japanese whalers will be heading down to hunt them in the next month or two..
Our gutless government just stands by so we need to show our support for the cause…
You’re invited to paddle with Rasta and the Transparentsea crew at Bondi this Thursday 5th November. Word on the street is they’re trying to gather 1,000 surfers for the paddleout. Another beautiful morning. Almost balmy with some warm air arriving overnight. The ocean is calm with some very small 1/2 – 1 ft ripples washing ashore.

A good day to think about horses running in circles.

Lycra enthusiasts. Everywhere.

You couldn’t have wished for a better day to hold the Sydney to ‘Gong bike ride on Sunday. Clear blue skies with a gentle north breeze tail wind all the way. No waves to talk of so i spent the morning shooting some of the eleven thousand or so lycra clad cyclists who made the ride. The competitive ones taking a couple of hours and the stragglers arriving through the arvo..

Spandex is the name of the fabric used for making sporting apparel that should not be worn away from the intended sporting activity. eg garish coloured bike pants and budgie smugglers.
Spandex is a generic name and not derived from the chemical name of the fiber, as are most manufactured fibers, but an anagram of the word “expands”. Spandex is the preferred name in North America; in many European countries it is referred to as “elastane” but here in Oz it is known by the brand-name Lycra…
